Education

Hi! My name is Barbara. I just finished my Psychology major at the University of Massachusetts, Boston and I am working on a Biology degree now. I have a 3.9 GPA. This will be my fifth year of college and I will soon be applying to Medical School for psychiatry with a specialty in integrative medicine. I am a member of the Freshman Honor Society, The National Society of Leadership and Success, and the Golden Key International Honor Society.

Experience

I typically work with students who are really struggling in their subject areas but I would be willing to help anyone. I have tutored many international students and really enjoy helping them to build grammar and writing skills. I am a very patient tutor because I once was tutored in math and I know how it feels to be on the other side of the interaction. My passion and strength lies in the social sciences such as sociology, gender studies, psychology, anthropology, and environmental science but I am experienced at tutoring English and writing as well. I am also a painter and sculptor and can tutor or teach art skills. My tutoring approach begins with asking the student to show me what he/she needs help with and we go over some current or past assignments/papers/exams so that I can get a feel for the areas that the student needs help with. I like to find out a students learning style and incorporating that into our sessions. Some students learn best through verbal explanation, some through visual depiction, and others learn best through gestures and acting things out. I am a visual learner myself so I like to illustrate concepts that a student finds challenging through images and visual charts. I enjoy productive sessions in which the student walks away feeling like he/she really learned something. My goal is always to increase the student’s level of confidence in a particular area because learning facts is one thing, but being confident enough to apply these concepts is the key to a successful future with the subject.
