That’s why tutoring has always come naturally to me - I can claim a heartfelt interest in the subjects I tutor. Academics excite me (especially history, geography, and the humanities), and this has been my most important asset as a tutor. Enthusiasm is contagious, and I first became passionate about my studies after meeting teachers who were really serious about what they taught because they loved it so dearly. Their excitement was tangible and they left you wondering just what about this subject gave them such a thrill. This is the kind of energy I bring to the table every day because its the best way to teach my students. My passion for knowledge has been my biggest advantage over my fellow tutors because I never have to feign enthusiasm or worry about my students staying interested. I have never had to push myself to review the curriculum one more time, to explain the answer one more time, to seek out more information, or to walk the extra mile. I like tutoring, that is motivation enough. I like knowing all the facts and I have been searching for them my whole high school and college career, regardless of whether someone was going to test me on them. This is the kind of attitude and energy I strive to impress upon my students. My drive to learn has been my best way to teach, something that makes me a better tutor all the time. Besides tutoring friends in my off time in high school and college, one of my most important tutoring experiences was teaching seniors how to use computers for an NYC senior outreach program called Dorot. Although much of the subject material was not particularly complicated, many of the seniors struggled with it because they had no experience with computers or were physically impaired in some way. It was difficult for me because unlike academics, teaching someone how to shutdown a computer was not particularly thrilling. But, I learned how to be patient from this - how to keep pushing someone who felt like their efforts are useless. I also took pleasure in seeing their delight when they did reach their goals, even if it seemed like something small.
