Experience

AHOY! In a sea of writing tutors and editors, why pick me? It's not just that I have over 7 years of professional experience at a variety of institutions OR that I'm offering a discounted price while I build my reputation as a soloist. Consider the following: (For short version, read ++headings++. Formatting options on this site are limited, sorry!) ++I LOVE Doing This!++ Like any good teacher and friend, watching you succeed is genuinely rewarding to me. My sessions are conversational and unconventional, and I know how to capitalize on your strengths and tackle your weaknesses, then high five you at the end. ++ESL (English as Second Language), No Problem++ Owing to the diverse demographics at schools for which I've worked, English was not the native language of many of my tutees. With my help, we turned this into an advantage, often outperforming native speakers who took writing for granted and didn't cultivate their skills. You're ahead of the game! ++I'm A Linguist++ Many English majors know grammar, NOT writing. Sure, grammar is important, and I can use any style guide and help edit your work as well as any of them, but expressing your ideas effectively is an altogether different skill. As a linguist, I learned to look at how language actually functions, rather than trying to impose functions onto it. A coherent, well-organized, enjoyable piece of writing, written with clarity, ALWAYS trumps grammar. My superior grades demonstrated this to classmates who otherwise had excellent grammar. An incomprehensible sentence is FAR more harmful than an out-of-place comma. Besides, grammar mistakes are inevitable, and your reader will overlook or even outright ignore them if your writing is good, ESPECIALLY if said reader is wearily slogging through dozens of other essays as well. ++All Skill Levels & Age Groups++ I've tutored them all. At the most rigorous level, I edited and tutored for both undergraduate AND graduate students at Emory University, writing in the huge range of subject areas offered by such a demanding research institution. I also provided research assistance as an assistant librarian there, so I can give you plenty of pointers on how to find what you need and turn it into what you want to write. No less important, I volunteered at a homeless shelter in Porterdale, GA, helping kids with practically no education to beat the odds by tutoring them for standardized tests and school/job applications. I also tutored the full spectrum of students at Perimeter College, from fresh high school graduates to adult professionals who had been out of school for years (or even decades). ++I've Graded Your Papers++ I was a TA for a year and have an insider perspective on what faculty and graders are typically looking for in your work. Enough said. ++My Grades++ I made straight A's in all classes in English, Linguistics, or with a writing designation. In truth, this isn't just about good writing; it's also about navigating each instructor's idiosyncratic “preferences.” I can help you get into their heads. ++My Approach (Online or In Person) – Editing vs Writing++ I'm happy to edit your paper for grammatical coherency by simply sending you suggestions/corrections, but if you want your best work, I strongly recommend doing it collaboratively in a session with me. The vast majority of these submissions suffer from major structural or expressive flaws, so you will likely save time, money, and be happier with the end result of a writing session. I won't expose my entire methodology here, but my twofold session goals apply to both expert and developing writers: 1. Resolve immediate technical problems/concerns with your assignment. 2. Help you systemize your own style, method, and “voice” for all future writing. For expert writers who need a bit of polish, this enables you to make your strengths more recognizable and consistent. For developing writers who need a lot help, this builds confidence and independence in fundamentals. I enjoy both – so don't be shy! In time, you may feel so comfortable that you don't even need me anymore! Some people might call this career suicide, but frankly I wouldn't be happy doing it any other way. That said, it always helps to have a fresh pair of eyes look over your masterpiece. Too often, typical tutors fail to build trust with their tutee, and they overlook obvious hazards, such as adjusting to one's audience or proper use of a thesaurus. They can be intimidated by technical writing or unfamiliar subjects, but good writing is never dependent on subject matter. Writing doesn't have to feel like an unnatural process. I know how to help you organize and articulate your writing such that, over time, it feels genuinely like your own and it becomes almost as easy as speaking! Together, we can make writing less daunting or, if your writing is excellent already, we can work to make it as flawless and fluid as you please.
