About Melissa

Gender:Female
Preferred Subjects:Spanish, Italian, English as a second language, History, Study Skills, Writing, Social Studies
Education:I graduated in April 2013 from the University of Pittsburgh with a bachelor of arts in African history, a certificate in African Studies, and a minor in Italian. I was on the Dean's List every semester and graduated at the top of my class.
Experience:Last spring, I studied abroad in Stellenbosch, South Africa. I plan to work for a year or two in refugee services and then go to school for a master's in public policy and international relations of some sort.

I love being a tutor because I feel that the social sciences and languages are often assumed to be less important or less difficult than science and math. These subjects are not necessarily less difficult, and they are certainly no less important. I love watching people learn - seeing the light bulb moment is amazing, and I enjoy helping my students progress.

I am in Boston for the summer and currently am only tutoring one client from Pittsburgh via Skype, so I have time to take on several clients. I have experience tutoring beginning, intermediate and advanced Spanish, beginning Italian, and working with a student for whom English is a second language. I can also tutor history and social studies, including political science.

I completed an independent study during my last semester on the use of Rwandan children as soldiers during the genocide there in 1994. I received an A on this paper, which was 25 pages long. I am very comfortable with research and writing and am able to tutor these skills also.

She has been working with my daughter for 2 months and it has made all the difference in the world! Our situation is a little different than most and she has been very flexible and accommodating. She is simply wonderful. I have not reservation about recommending her to others.
